Take two loaves: one, sliced medium white, wrapped in cellophane; the other an unsliced sourdough, wrapped in brown paper. Decades ago the white loaf would have been the beginning to many a comparison and the sourdough seen as nothing special.
Today however, the sourdough is the new best thing since sliced bread. Who would have thought that Britain would embrace a £10 loaf 10 years ago, but they did, and things moved on from there. Once again, slowly but surely, artisan bakers have come into their own again as a squishy white loaf loses favour.

The 2013 selection reflects the sustained improvement in the quality of restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau. It also highlights the fast changes in the industry, and increasing richness and diversity of the gastronomy. This is the 5th edition of the awards and remarkably has 40% changes and new entries from 2012. It lists a total of 286 establishments in Hong Kong (244 restaurants and 42 hotels) and 62 establishments in Macau (46 restaurants and 16 hotels). Among them, 65 new restaurants are new entries (51 in Hong Kong and 14 in Macau).

We’ve seen hot cans, now it’s time for hot eggs. This is just ingenious! The Gogol Mogol is a single-use cardboard egg box made with special chemical layers that produce heat when activated, similar to the technology used for self-heating tins from calcium hydroxide, water and other chemicals which create heat when mixed together. A tag pulled from the container sets off a chemical reaction which makes the small package warm up and cook the egg in just two minutes.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' annual Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo (FNCE) took place last week, new research from ConAgra Foods, Inc., one of North America's leading food makers, shows that what you add to your diet can be just as important as what you remove.
"Americans are tired of hearing about diet recommendations that focus on foods to avoid," says Kristin Reimers, PhD, RD, Nutrition Manager, ConAgra Foods.
